SUMMARY:2024 February Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Heat Pump Chillers to Replace Boilers\nDecarbonization entails various strategies to reduce direct and indirect carbon use related to mechanical systems – and electrification of heating is a key pillar in this effort. This presentation will detail how vapor compression chillers can be utilized to recover or source heat from air and water to replace fossil-fuel based boilers which are the incumbent source of heat for many buildings. You will learn about heat pump fundamentals\, calculation of COP and its relation to heating cost\, system sizing recommendations\, and common equipment arrangements. \nSpeaker: Mihir Nandkeolyar\nMihir Nandkeolyar is the Channel Manager for YORK Heat Pumps and Chillers at Johnson Controls\, in Canada and the Midwestern United States. In prior roles\, he has lead Chiller Applications Engineering teams for both North America and the Middle East. He has been with Johnson Controls for over 10 years primarily in the chiller product team. Mihir is an ASHRAE member and co-author of the ASHRAE position document on Climate Change. \nSponsor\nThis dinner presentation is sponsored by Windy City Representatives

SUMMARY:2024 January Dinner
DESCRIPTION:New Refrigerants\nNew societal environmental demands to control climate change are driving the development of new regulatory policies to restrict and lower the direct GWP (global warming potential) impact of F-gases. The HVAC&R industry is currently being challenged to invest significant resources to understand the best refrigerants that meet the above requirements. However\, there are many uncertainties and challenges given the ever-changing global regulatory environment\, within regions\, country\, state\, and sometimes locally by city. Today designers are being asked to consider new lower direct GWP unsaturated hydrofluorocarbons (HFOs) refrigerants\, some of which are slightly flammable under certain conditions\, as well as revisiting the application of natural refrigerants\, like carbon dioxide\, ammonia\, hydrocarbons\, and water. \nThis presentation will provide an update on new lower GWP alternatives introduced into the marketplace and it will highlight some important considerations\, particularly flammability\, that engineers\, designers\, and building owners should keep in mind regarding next-generation refrigerants. \nSpeaker: Steve Kujak\nOur presenter\, Steve Kujak\, is the director of Next Generation Refrigerants Research for Trane Technologies. Over the past 30 years\, he has been involved in technology development of new refrigerants\, absorption chillers and IAQ cleaning technologies. Steve has been an author or co-author on 50+ publications related to refrigerants and has 30+ patents related to HVAC products. Steve is a distinguished member and lecturer for ASHRAE and is involved in numerous refrigerant safety and use standards used globally by the HVACR industry. He is the past chair of ASHRAE Standard 34 “Designation & Safety Classification of Refrigerants” and the vice-chair of the Refrigeration Committee Technology Committee for Comfort\, Process\, and the Cold Chain (REF-CPCC).

DESCRIPTION:HVAC System Design towards Net Zero\nSome areas of our country have in place the goal to achieve Net Zero facility construction by 2030.\n2030 is not that far away. Will other areas of the country\, our area\, put in place similar goals?\nWhat would it take to design HVAC systems for a Net Zero facility?\nThis focus of this presentation will discuss concepts in building design and HVAC design that will move us in that direction. \nSpeaker: William Hromada\, P.E.\nBill is a mechanical engineer with a BSME degree from Illinois Institute of Technology and has been in the consulting engineering field for 40 years. Bill is currently Principal/Vice President for Millies Engineering Group\, a consulting engineering firm in Munster\, Indiana.

SUMMARY:May 2023 - Your Chapter\, Your Voice
DESCRIPTION:May Meeting\n \nThis month\, the chapter leadership wants to work on engaging with you\, the members. We’ve been running the chapter for the last few years without a lot of mandate from the members. We’re looking to change that. We want to hear from you; what have we done well? What could we work on? What gets you excited? What would bring you to a meeting if you don’t already go? \nIt’s about more than just current members though. It’s also about how to attract new members and how to encourage people who attend meetings but aren’t members to join. How can we as a chapter grow and expand and how can leadership change and grow as well? \n\n\n\nEvening Meeting – May 18\nProfessional Cost: Free\nStudent Cost: Free for student chapter members! (sponsored by the chapter)\nCheck-in and cocktails: 5:30-6:00PM EDT (4:30-5:00PM CDT)\nDinner/Program: 6:00PM EDT (5:00PM CDT) to 8:00PM EDT (7:00PM EDT) \nZorn Brew Works\n605 E 9th Street\nMichigan City\, IN 46360\nhttps://zornbrewworks.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembership\nAs the members of the chapter\, you define our purpose. We would like to talk about ways to engage existing members and to draw new members and attendees to the events. For the chapter\, membership isn’t defined by dues so much as participation. The chapter\, and we the members\, are stronger when we have a variety of people at the meetings asking questions. Of course there will also be the obligatory discussion on volunteering and helping run the chapter. The chapter is also stronger when the leadership varies both over time and in background. \nInterests\nPart of building chapter engagement and membership is ensuring that we have meetings and activities that interest our members. We’re looking for feedback and insights in how to better select our meeting topics/speakers. We also want to discuss the timing and locations for the meetings. This is an opportunity to help the chapter speak more to you and your interests. Do you prefer breakfast meetings? Do you think we need to be talking more about the newest research in fluid dynamics? Let us know! \nManagement\nIt might not be the most glamorous part of chapter operations\, but management and administration are the backbone that keeps the chapter running. As a chapter\, we have gotten lax when it comes to components of the bylaws\, such as in the instance of elections. Some of the topics discussed above are also referenced in the bylaws (like the number of regularly scheduled meetings). The current leadership wants to take this opportunity to clarify how the membership would like to see the chapter operate\, and then align the bylaws with those expectations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What do I need to look for when checking if a site has the power for my project? \nFor our November meeting\, Alex Gidcumb of Millies Engineering Group will be presenting an introduction to electrical design concepts targeting mechanical engineers and architects. He will be discussing the basics of electricity and power and real world examples showing initial system selections. Topics covered will include voltage\, electrical phases\, power\, equipment ratings\, service considerations\, and low voltage systems. \nAbout Alex\nAlex Gidcumb is a project engineer with close to 4 years of experience as an MEP consultant\, primarily in power distribution and lighting design. He graduated from Purdue University Northwest with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a concentration in power and energy. His ability to motivate\, instill confidence in others\, and expertise on a multitude of projects has made him a force in the MEP industry. He is presently working at Millies Engineering Group as an accomplished electrical engineer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
