Chapter Meeting
Topic
Understanding the concept of temperature change, moisture change, enthalpy and the associated calculation are all part of the design evaluation process referred to as psychrometrics. The common notion is that as long as cooling or heating takes place, the environmental conditions can be defined as “comfortable”. Over many years, experience has shown that there is much more to human comfort than just temperature. These properties can be classified into four major factors categories:
- Heating
- Cooling
- Humidifying
- Dehumidifying
This month’s presentation will elaborate on advanced HVAC design and system development. The presentation will look at how the psychrometric process is applied as well as going through different examples. All of which can help design a system that provides better comfort.
Speaker Info
For the month of February our chapter welcomes Douglas F. Zentz – an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer – as this month’s presenter. In the field of HVACR, his background and experience included working with the Trane Company in professional engineering sales, Manager of engineering-design-build for W.J. O’Neil Company, and the vice president of engineering for EPPA-Strand Custom Air Handling in Detroit, MI. His experience in the industry started in 1980 up until 2003 where he transitioned his career over to academics and taught at Ferris State University.
As a teacher, Douglas Zentz has taught junior and senior level HVAC design courses for both primary and secondary systems. His teaching experiences also include Commercial Building Heat Gain, Primary Equipment Selection, and the development of new curriculum for both in-classroom and online courses. In addition to teaching he has also served on several educational committees. Most notably as a member of Fluke Instrument’s Advisory Board on IAQ.
Being a member ASHRAE he has held the following positions:
- Former president of West Michigan ASHRAE
- Former RVC of Student Activities for Region V
- Past Regional Members Council Representative for Region V
- Past Director and Regional Chair for Region V
Doug Zentz has been noted as a Distinguished Lecturer for ASHRAE since 2012 and currently has eight approved topics. For this month’s chapter meeting he will be presenting the topic of Applied Psychrometric Processes and how it relates to the elements of advanced HVAC systems and design process.
